Salisbury officer fires shot at charging pit bull

MARYLAND -- A Salisbury police officer fired one shot at a pit bull that started to charge at him, Salisbury Police Chief Barbara Duncan said.

The dog was not struck.

Duncan said at about 9:45 p.m. Monday, Officer Matt Weiss went to a home in the 1900 block of Pine Way to serve a criminal summons. While there, a young child let the pit bull outside and it began growling at the officer before it charged at him, she said.

Duncan said there were no charges relating to this incident, as the animal was not being used as a weapon.

A use-of-force report was completed and it was found that Weiss acted within the agency’s policy, Duncan said. The warrant was also served on the woman.
