Toddler airlifted to hospital after dog attack

FLORIDA -- A 10-month-old Sarasota boy is recovering at All Children's Hospital from a dog bite. Sarasota EMS says he suffered extensive injuries to his face.

Sarasota County Animal Services has impounded this pit bull mix for safety reasons.

A neighbor tells the baby boy had been staying at the dog's house. They've never seen Fudge be aggressive.

"He's normally a good dog. I've never seen him be aggressive or growl, he barks. It's ridiculous, it's crazy. I have a pit bull, it's a shock my pit bull has never bitten a human," says Nikki Sims, a next door neighbor.

According to the Sarasota Sheriff's Office, the dog named Fudge has bitten two girls since 2009.

Incident reports show a dog bite to a 9-year-old girl in 2009, a 13-year-old girl in 2012 and a five-year-old boy in 2013.

Police have investigated Fudge on three prior occasions for biting kids:

•In 2009, a 9-year-old came to the dog's house, knocked on the door, and was bitten on her knee when the dog ran up to her. The girl was treated for puncture wounds at the hospital and Fudge's owner, Angel "Lisa" Zargo, was issued a citation.

•In 2012, Zargo says the dog was sleeping in bed when a 12-year-old startled him awake and then bit her. Because the dog was determined to have been disturbed in its environment, no further action was taken.

•The third incident happened in 2013 when a 5-year-old boy visiting with his father was bitten on his hand. No citation was issued.
