Wyo. Highway Patrol Troopers step in to help young girls

WYOMING -- The Wyoming Highway Patrol today shared a great story about the work that they do for the state as well as the communities that they belong to.

Below is a letter of commendation that was submitted by Lieutenant Mike Steinberg of the Natrona County Sheriff’s Office.

“On February 1, 2015 I was made aware of an incident Trooper Bill Kirkman and Natrona County Sheriff’s Deputy Jay Snider were involved in Evansville.

While [responding to a car burglary] on January 31, 2015 at approximately 1:10 p.m., Trooper Kirkman saw and heard two young girls screaming for help. Trooper Kirkman saw a German Shepard dog attempting to [attack] the girls.

Trooper Kirkman immediately exited his vehicle and ran towards the girls, positioning himself between them and the vicious dog. The dog lunged at Trooper Kirkman who then sprayed the dog with pepper spray. The pepper spray did not deter the dog and the dog again attempted to advance towards Trooper Kirkman and the girls. Deputy Snider had arrived by this time and was able to deploy his taser on the dog.

Trooper Kirkman’s actions saved the young girls from potential serious bodily injury and reflects the great credit upon himself, the Wyoming Highway Patrol, and the law enforcement community.”

For those of you who do not know Trooper Bill Kirkman, an 18 year Wyoming Highway Patrol veteran stationed in Casper, let it be known that throughout his career, Trooper Kirkman has demonstrated a unique knack to be at similar right places, at similar right times.

Well done Trooper Kirkman and Deputy Snider!

[NOTE: After being tasered, the dog got up and ran away, but was later found in the parking lot of HQ Southern BBQ in Evansville.  One of the girls was bitten by the dog. According to the report, the dog's owner has been cited twice previously for dog bites. Metro Animal Control impounded the dog.]
