Another Chihuahua fatally mauled in Christchurch

NEW ZEALAND -- Christchurch woman Val Broad thought her faithful companion was taking an afternoon nap on the front lawn until she saw his fur was drenched in blood.

Cody, a six-year-old Chihuahua, was mauled to death in his own front yard yesterday.

Broad didn't hear or see the attack, but went outside when she saw a woman hurrying what she described as a pit bull-type dog out the front gate.

"She didn't have it on a lead. It had just jumped the fence and attacked Cody," Broad said.

"Whether she was going to take the dog and go, or whether… I don't know what she was going to do, actually."

The owner of the dog took Broad and Cody to a night vet, where he was left in critical condition.

When Broad returned home, the vet rang to say her dog had fallen asleep and died peacefully.

The council had been alerted to the incident and were investigating said Fiona Proudfoot, Acting Unit Manager of Inspections and Enforcement.

Broad understood the dog that killed Cody was still with its owner while investigations took place.

The attack had left pet-owners in the neighbourhood on edge, she said, as it had been roaming the streets without a leash for some time.

"It was running wild for quite a while, so I'm told."

"Now the neighbour across the road is frightened. She's worried the dog is going to jump the fence and attack her dog."

Another neighbour heard "a lot of noise" at 7pm yesterday, when the attack happened.

"It's terrible. The little dog was in his own yard. The other dog needs to be destroyed, basically," he said.

"I feel so sorry for her. For the other dog to jump the fence, that's really savage."

Cody is the fourth chihuahua killed by dogs in Christchurch in three weeks.

On January 31, Harrison was killed at a dog park in Rolleston. Three days later, Tink and Apple were killed by a pit bull in their own backyard.

Family had rallied around Broad, who lives alone, while she dealt with the loss of her friend.
She planned to have Cody cremated.
