Convicted dog killer, Joel Ruth, sentenced to jail, probation

OHIO -- A LaGrange man has been sentenced for brutally killing his family's beloved dog in a drunken rage.

LaGrange Police say Joel Ruth killed the family dog and buried it in a shallow grave behind his house on South Center Street back in November 2014. Ruth's wife told police he had been drinking when he slit their 9-year-old golden retriever's neck.

According to police, Ruth threatened to do the same to his brother-in-law.

Ruth pleaded no contest to animal cruelty and aggravated menacing.

On Wednesday, a judge suspended all but 180 days of his sentence, with credit for the 89 days he has already spent in jail. The judge also ordered Ruth to stop drinking, attend alcohol counseling, as well as an anger management program. Most importantly, he was ordered to stay away from animals.

When released from jail, Ruth will be placed on probation. He also has to be supervised around animals and cannot own one.

Additionally, Ruth was ordered to have no contact with his brother-in-law.

If he violates any of these conditions in the next five years, he could go back to jail to complete his sentence.
