Dog shot and killed by Rains County Investigator

TEXAS -- A Rains County Investigator shot and killed a dog Monday while assisting CPS. The shooting comes nearly a year after Rains County Deputy Jerrod Dooley shot a dog while responding to a burglary call. Dooley was later fired.

Regarding Monday’s incident, the Rains County Sheriff’s Office said the incident occurred at a residence off CR 1308.

Investigators were confronted by a large aggressive dog and honked the horn to get a resident out of the house. A female came out and waived at them and the CPS case worker got out of the vehicle and began walking towards the house. The woman went back inside and the dog was still barking and became more aggressive biting at the CPS worker.

Authorities say the Investigator who approached the residence was yelling for the lady to come back out and get her dog, but instead a small child came out of the house.

The dog had already bitten at the Investigator and turned again towards the Investigator lunging, mouth open snapping to bite him. The Rains County Investigator then drew and discharged his firearm killing the dog.

According to the Rains County Sheriff’s Department, the case will be investigated to ensure the Investigator acted within the scope of his duties, and that all protocols were followed.
