Fifty-seven Animals Rescued from NE Arkansas Puppy Mill

ARKANSAS -- More than 50 animals were rescued from a puppy mill in Northeastern Arkansas.

The Randolph County Sheriff's Office found the dogs outside in the frigid temperatures with icicles hanging on their fur. They did not have shelter, food or water, and were shackled to poles and trees.

Some of the animals were so emaciated and matted, they could not even move.

The dogs are now in Central Arkansas, recovering at the Humane Society of Saline County. They are doing much better, but still need serious medical treatment.

"When you take them of the chain and you hold them and they're shivering and trembling. It is heartbreaking. They've got heartworms, ehrlichia and the matting was unbelievable. Some of the dogs looked like they had four tails," said Dale Bartlett, with the Humane Society of the United States.

The Randolph County Sheriff's Office called in the Humane Society of the United States to help crack down on the puppy mill after receiving complaints. They rescued 46 dogs, 3 cats and 8 chickens.

The property owner has not yet been charged. According to the Humane Society, the owner was previously convicted of animal cruelty in 2013 for breeding Great Pyrenees dogs to sell online and in person.
