FLORIDA -- When a Florida woman came home, she was greeted by a scene that so distressed and disgusted that it caused her to call the police on her husband.
Manuel Ramon Gonzalez, 61, was arrested when his wife called police after seeing him commit sex acts with the family’s Chihuahua on their home surveillance system, reports the Mirror.
Gonzalez was arrested and has since pled guilty to animal cruelty and sexual activity with an animal. The entire disturbing scene was captured on the family’s home security surveillance cameras.
According to officials at the Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, they respond to close to 30,000 calls each and every year, and nearly half of them are possible abuse cases. Florida has the highest number of severe animal crimes.
Gonzalez has been put on probation for one year. Gonzalez’s wife had started divorce proceedings before the incident and is moving forward with them, reports Fox2Now.
Authorities say that Florida’s animal abuse problems continue to grow, especially in South Florida.
Officials have also seen other bizarre cases in the Sunshine State, such as a caged dog with its mouth duct-taped shut, dogs with burns, and hoarders with dozens of animals.
In 2007, the Humane Society of the United States reported that close to 65 percent of animal cruelty cases involved dogs, 18 percent involved cats, and 25 percent were other animals.
Gonzalez is just one in a growing list of Floridians being caught sexually abusing animals. In 2011, 54-year-old Eugene Hickman was arrested in June after his grandson discovered him naked on top of the family bulldog. In 2004, Ocala resident Randol Mitchell was caught by his girlfriend having sex with her Rottweiler. In 2005, Alan Yoder was charged with animal cruelty after he was caught having sex with his guide dog. This is just an example of the cases in Florida over the years.
“We do see a lot of it. A lot of times we wish there was more we could do. We wish there was stronger laws. We wish people would immediately go to jail and stay there,” said Captain Dave Walesky, of the Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control.
“It just doesn’t make sense why people do things like that. It’s really unexplainable from my perspective. There’s no reason to justify something like that. I wouldn’t say that necessarily there’s been an increase in any one area. But we do see enough of it that you know; it’s kind of like enough enough. When is it gonna stop?” he added.
It became illegal in Florida to have sex with animals back in September of 2011. Senate Bill 344 bans “sexual contact” and “sexual conduct” with animals.
