Jack Brooke threw 15-week old puppy at a wall

UNITED KINGDO -- A man who volunteered for the RSPCA killed a puppy by throwing it against a wall in a row with his girlfriend’s mother.

Jack Brooke grabbed Dawn Venners’ 15-week-old dog, called Buddy, and flung it 9ft across the room during an argument at her home on Ainsty Crescent, Wetherby, Leeds magistrates were told.

Mike Vittis, prosecuting said: “Mrs Venners described hearing a cracking sound as the dog hit the wall.

“She said the dog briefly spasmed twice before lying still.”

The court was told Brooke, 24, had lost his temper during a row about money at the home, where he was living with his then girlfriend, Mrs Venners’ daughter Kayleigh Kavanagh.

He initially grabbed Mrs Venners by the arms, before taking Buddy from her and throwing him across the living room.

The puppy - a cross between a Pomaranian and a poodle called a pomapoo - was taken to a vet after the incident, on January 12, but had already died.

Brooke, now of South View, Halifax, broke down in tears as his solicitor Alex Boyd told the court that his client was devastated by what he had done.

Mr Boyd said Brooke had suffered from learning difficulties and anger management problems, but had a love of animals and had volunteered for the RSPCA.

He said: “It’s clear that through this action there was a risk that the death of the dog could have occurred, but it wasn’t one which he considered at the time and that’s perhaps indicative of someone with anger management issues and thinking deficit.”

Brooke, who pleaded guilty to animal cruelty, was given a 12-month community order, including a 30-day activity requirement and 150 hours of community work. He was also ordered to pay £145 costs.
