Florida: Breeder Lindsay Sanders arrested after police find dead and dying Great Danes on her property

FLORIDA -- The Bay County Sheriff’s Office arrested a local woman yesterday after complaints from neighbors alerted law enforcement to a case of animal cruelty.

Fifteen Great Danes suffering neglect were removed from the property.

On January 2, 2015, deputies responded to 7170 Troy Road in Youngstown because of complaints from neighbors that dogs were getting into their garbage. Animal Control had also responded to the home.

In the backyard were pens of Great Dane puppies and a dozen adult Great Danes in distress due to neglect. The skeletal remains of other dogs were located inside pens in the back and the front yard.

No one was home but deputies smelled a strong odor of decomposition coming from the home and entered the residence. Inside, in the living room area, were two Great Dane puppies dead inside a dog crate. In the dining room area was a 10 by 10 foot pen filled with wood shavings and dog feces.

There was a small bowl of moldy food in the corner of the pen. Outside the pen were several bowls of water, one containing the body of a dead rat. The home reeked of urine and feces.

A neighbor called the owner of the dogs and deputies spoke to Lindsay Sanders. She stated she was unable to return to the home but was on a honeymoon with her husband. She [claimed she] had left a man she called “Red” in charge of the dogs. She told deputies she met “Red” in a bar and when he told her he needed a place to stay, she arranged for him to stay in the home and care for the dogs while she was gone.

Sanders told deputies she had returned home the day before and fed the dogs scraps of deer meat.

She refused to return home or tell deputies where she was.

Fifteen Great Danes were immediately removed by Animal Control and, due to the condition of the residence, Code Enforcement was called to the scene and deemed the home uninhabitable.

A warrant was issued for Lindsay Sanders and she was located and arrested February 4, 2015 on thirteen counts of misdemeanor Animal Cruelty and two counts of felony Animal Cruelty.
