New Haven bar manager faces multiple animal cruelty charges

CONNECTICUT -- A bar manager in New Haven is facing several animal cruelty charges after police say they found cockfighting ring in the basement of his bar.

Police have been investigating health and building code violations for months at Taino’s Cafe International on Grand Avenue. News 8 spoke to the suspect in the case, Roberto Perez, who says the police have it all wrong.

“They don’t catch me fighting rooster, all my roosters was clean,” Perez told News 8. “They don’t fight, was in the cage, so they came over here and get it. I said if you want it, take it.”

The bar manager is facing eight counts of animal cruelty, one for each rooster officials found.
