Piedmont couple arrested after dog found dead, chained to tree, police say

ALABAMA -- A Piedmont man and his wife were arrested Tuesday, police say, after officers found a dead dog chained to a tree in the couple’s backyard.

Joy Flenord, 43, and Travis Flenord, 40, were arrested and both charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty, said Piedmont police Chief Freddie Norton.

Norton said the city’s animal control officer told police Monday that during the weekend, the officer had a call about the animal.

“Officers went to the home and found the dog dead, laying in the backyard,” Norton said.

Norton said the animal control officer was not at work on Tuesday, and that he was unsure of the details of what may have caused the dog’s death.

The animal control officer removed several other dogs from the home, which is on Littlejohn Drive, Norton said. Those dogs have since been taken to a local shelter, he said.

Both defendants were taken to the Piedmont City Jail  on Tuesday afternoon. Bond for both was set at $300.
