UNITED KINGDOM -- Kitten found by a passer-by who stopped on their way home from work to search the bushes after hearing her crying
A six-month-old kitten was hung from a tree and shot at in an horrific attack by yobs.
Suki was found by a passer-by who stopped on their way home from work to search the bushes after hearing an animal crying.
The brown and white kitten was found last Sunday in Lord Lane, Failsworth, hanging upside down in a noose which had been attached to her leg and a bush.
Pellets were also found in Suki’s back, indicating the kitten had been used as a target and shot at.
The next day Suki was taken to the Millstream Animal Shelter in Hyde, Tameside, for professional help.
Public liaison worker for the shelter, Debbie Chetham, said: “She had been hanging there for goodness knows how long, and when she came to us her leg was just a total mess. It was all swollen and she had no movement in it at all. She was purring a lot, and when a cat is unhappy, purring can mean they’re in a lot of pain.”
Shelter staff took Suki to Tameside Veterinary Clinic where she had operations to fix her fractured leg and remove shot pellets from her back.
Veterinary surgeon at the clinic Diarmuid Currid added: “Her leg had a wound where the string was attached and she had broken it at the ankle.
“She also had shot gun pellets in her lower back, which implies she had been shot at during the same incident. We had to put pins in her legs to fix the fracture, but removing the pellets was fairly easy.”
Suki’s leg was placed in a cast, and the kitten is now receiving antibiotics for an infection caused by the string wound to her leg.
Diarmuit added: “It is possible for a cat to get caught in a bit of string, but not to be tied to a tree. It looks like she was tied there and then shot at.
“She’s still receiving on going care from us for check-ups, but it’s still early days - we are all hopeful.”
Spokesman for the RSPCA Andy Robins said: “We come across all sorts of animal cruelty, but this one is particularly horrific because they have actually gone out of their way to target this animal.”
