Florida: Tampa man Daniel Turk arrested for hitting dog with hammer, deputies said

FLORIDA -- A Tampa man is in jail after hitting his pit bull with a hammer, Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies said.

Daniel Turk, 58, has a cat and a pit bull named Tiger. According to the HCSO report, the cat and the dog started fighting and he tried to break them up.

That's when he hit Tiger on the head with a hammer, deputies said. He dragged the dog outside and kept hitting it on the head and the face with the hammer to put it down. Deputies recovered the hammer at the scene.

OK, I get that he was trying to save the cat. But to "keep beating it in the head with a hammer"... no. Take the dog to the shelter and have it euthanized. You do not beat it to death with a hammer.

Tiger suffered multiple injuries to the head, according to HCSO. After the arrest post Miranda Turk said he had hit the pup in the head about 20 times to "knock him out."

He signed all the ownership rights on both animals to the county and refused to provide any treatment for them.

Both the cat and the dog are at a local emergency clinic and are expected to survive. Turk's bond is set at $2,000, he is still in jail on a charge of aggravated cruelty to animals.

  1. I love animals enough to not wish this on the dog. If you feel you must kill an animal, do it as quickly and humanely as possible. Tiger might be dangerous, but you just don't beat an animal with a hammer.
