Woman charged with negligence after dog attack

FLORIDA -- A 58-year-old woman has been charged with culpable negligence after six dogs attacked a 49-year-old man who was out walking on New Year’s Day.

Geraldine Kay Pearce had three documented dog bite reports filed against her in Walton County with Walton County Animal Control, according to the arrest report.

She had been warned about her responsibilities as a dog owner, including “additional responsibilities concerning the ownership of ‘dangerous’ dogs due to previous bite cases,” the report said.

When questioned, Pearce allegedly referred to the six dogs that attacked the man as the “lab puppies,” claiming them as hers.

Pearce allowed “un-socialized dogs” to “roam free, in packs” both on and around her property “without regard for public safety,” according to the report.

The attack happened on Jan. 1, when 49-year-old Phillip Leiberman suffered numerous bites while out walking on Girl Scout Road, the report said.

The dogs stopped when a motorist saw the man and stopped to help.

Leiberman spent 13 days in North Okaloosa Medical Center with 600 puncture wounds.

He said in an earlier interview that although Walton County Sheriff’s Office had seized 40 dogs from the property, he believed there were more.

He is planning to move to Seagrove Beach, to a townhouse where he hopes to feel safer.

Pearce is facing six counts of misdemeanor culpable negligence, exposure to harm.
