Woman critical after pit bull mauling, could lose eye, arm

NEVADA -- A woman was in critical condition Friday night at UMC after being attacked by a pack of mixed-breed pit bulls while planting flowers at her northeast Las Vegas home earlier in the day.
The 65-year-old woman may lose an eye or an arm, or both, officials said.

At least three dogs attacked her about 9:45 a.m. while she was in the front yard of her home near Bonanza and Sloan roads. When a neighbor stepped in to help, the dogs also turned on him.

The attack did not end until police shot one of the dogs to death.

“She may end up losing one of the arms and/or an eye from the attack,” said Lt. Mark Reddon of Metro police.

The neighborhood is in shock and the police are continuing an investigation.

Janice Sisterman, a neighbor, said her husband tried to stop the dogs. Police believe the dogs had squeezed through their owner’s fence to get loose.

“She was just screaming and screaming and my husband was trying to shoo them away with rocks,” Sisterman said.

Her husband, Robert, suffered injuries to his arm. Both he and the woman were taken to UMC. He was treated and released.

Horrified neighbors said the dogs would not back off.

“The poor grandma,” Sisterman said. “She's a nice lady. I hope she makes it.”

When police arrived, they fired two shots, killing one of the dogs after it lunged at them.

Police said the dogs’ owner was not home at the time of the attack.

Sisterman said she never wants to see the dogs again.

“I hope they get the other three dogs and they take them away. I don't want them in the area.”

Animal Control said its officers have been called to the residence where the dogs lived at least twice in six months. The homeowner could face charges.
