Alamogordo woman facing felony charges for dangerous dogs

NEW MEXICO -- An Alamogordo woman is facing charges after her two dogs attacked and killed another dog. Police arrested Desiree Romeyn Thursday. She told police she knew that her two pit bulls were able to escape over the fence.

Alamogordo animal control found the two dogs outside a house on North Florida. The dogs were mauling another pit bull that was chained up inside the yard.  Animal control was able to stop the attacked after tranquilizing one of the dogs.  The injured dog was taken to the vet and died a few hours later.

“I think it’s terrible. I feel awful about that other little dog,” said Pauline Bechtold, a woman who lives on North Florida.

Romeyn faces two fourth degree felonies for having dangerous dogs.  Alamogordo animal control says this isn’t their first run in with Romeyn and her dogs.  Last year the dogs got out and attacked another dog.

“There are a lot of schools along that way. We do have heavy patrols around 3:00 for when the kids get out just in case something like this were to happen. But it falls back on the owners properly training their dogs and keeping a secure enclosure for their animals,” said Dwain Martinez, Manager of Alamogordo Animal Control.

Romeyn surrendered the dogs to the city. A judge will now determine if they’re too much of a danger to the public and decide if they need to be put down.
