Arizona: Bennie Wiley, 23, accused of starving his dogs

ARIZONA -- Maricopa County sheriff's deputies arrested a Morristown man on animal cruelty charges after receiving a tip that four dogs were being neglected.

Bennie Wiley, 23, was booked Wednesday into the Fourth Avenue Jail on nine misdemeanor counts of failing to provide necessary food, water and shelter to his dogs.

After receiving a tip on Aug. 20, detectives from the Animal Crimes Unit responded to Wiley's home and found the dogs in the backyard. They said the dogs appeared skinny and did not have any water, according to sheriff's spokesman Jeffrey Sprong.

They told Wiley to feed and put water out for his dogs, which he did.

Detectives followed up on several occasions. On Oct. 19, they again found the dogs without food and water. Sprong said some of the dogs were chained where they could not reach any shelter. The dogs appeared very thin and their fur was matted and patchy.

The dogs were seized and taken to a local animal hospital for treatment. After they are treated, they will be taken to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office MASH unit.

"Some people do not deserve to be animal owners," Sheriff Joe Arpaio said. "We are going to do everything we can to rehabilitate these animals. With air conditioning and plenty of food and water in our MASH unit, these dogs should do very well."
