CONNECTICUT -- An elderly woman was severely injured after being attacked by a dog last Thursday.
According to police, a Meals on Wheels driver was making a delivery to the home of 89 year old Leocadia Niedzwiecki on Long Swamp Road around 11 AM. During that time, the dog, a pit bull that was dumped by its owner, bit the driver on the hand.
Niedzwiekci walked the driver back to their vehicle after getting her food, and was attacked by the dog in the process. Police say she received serious injuries to both arms and hands, with one of the hands having the bones exposed. News 8 spoke with officials at Hartford Hospital Tuesday, who told us Niedzwiecki is in stable condition.
Animal control officers brought the dog to the local vet after the attack, and were told the dog was ten to fifteen pounds underweight and showed signs of neglect. Because the dog was considered too aggressive, the vets’ office put the dog down.
Officers are working to locate the owner of the dog to pursue charges. Police say the road is in a remote section of town and is often the location where stolen cars and unwanted dogs are left.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 860-747-1616.
