Lakewood man, Sokol Gjerazi, accused of leaving dog in open garage during bitter cold

OHIO -- A Lakewood man is accused of leaving his dog in an outdoor garage during a stretch of record-setting cold days in Northeast Ohio.

The dog was given only a three-foot leash and was found sitting in its own urine, according to the Lakewood Police Department.

Sokol Gjerazi, age not known, is charged with a first-degree misdemeanor count of animal cruelty.

A Ridgewood Avenue man called police about 9:45 a.m. Feb. 19 to complain about a barking dog at his neighbor's home. An officer whistled as he approached the home in question and heard the husky and Chow Chow mix barking in an open garage.

The dog's leash only gave the animal a few feet to move. There were four buckets of frozen water placed around the dog, the report said.

Gjerazi said that he keeps the dog in the garage because his daughter is allergic to its fur and because it once tried to kill his cat, according to the report. He told the officer that he loves his dog and has considered giving it to a shelter because he can't provide it with the care that it needs.

When the police officer came back to check on the house about three hours later, the dog was running through neighboring yards with Gjerazi chasing after it. Gjerazi caught the dog and placed it in an enclosed area in his backyard.

He was cited for animal cruelty and letting his dog run loose and was advised to keep the dog in his basement until he can build a proper shelter.
