Owner Angelia L. Burgess guilty in dog attack

GEORGIA -- Two separate cases involving dogs and their owners went before Magistrate Court at the Lowndes County Judicial and Administration Complex Tuesday.

Angelia L. Burgess pleaded guilty to charges of rabies control violation, restraint and confinement, and a nuisance animal charge.

Burgess' dog attacked and bit neighboring child, according to reports.

The dog was later euthanized.

Because the dog was euthanized, the court dismissed the rabies control violation charge.

The court ordered Burgess to pay a $750 fine for the nuisance charge and $250 fine for the restraint and confinement charge, along with court fees.

Burgess was unable to pay the fines and has until April 14, or she faces 60 days of incarceration — 30 days per charge.

The prosecution called three witnesses —  Animal Control Officer Christina Cantey, Christine Smith, the mother of the child, and David Asher, the Smiths' neighbor.

Burgess represented herself. She presented no witnesses and she chose not to testify.

After the trial, Smith said while the family got justice, the issue was not over.

"We still have to live through everything that happened," Smith said.
