Pit bull attacks local grandmother, kills her beloved dog Jessie

NEVADA -- A local grandmother is lucky to be alive after she was mauled by a pit bull and watched in terror as it killed her own small dog.

72-year-old Jeanette Mitchell is bruised and in stitches after she was attacked Sunday afternoon while walking her 9-pound mixed breed dog named Jessie.

RIP Jessie

Mitchell was on her way home from a walk when the pit bull came barreling out of a neighbor's yard, cornering her between the street and a brick wall. "I really thought somebody would help or do something, but what can they do? I guess they knew they were going to get bit too," Mitchell told Action News.

Mitchell says the pit bull knocked her down, ripping Jessie out of her arms. She had to watch as the pit bull ate Jessie alive, ripping her to shreds.

"I heard the screaming and one of the guys that was standing there watching, he almost threw up," Mitchell said.

Mitchell was taken to Valley Hospital with a deep laceration to her ankle. She said when she got stitches, she could see the bone showing. She also has bruises and cuts on her arm and backside.

More painful than her injuries however, is the loss of her companion, Jessie. "I couldn't stop crying yesterday," she said.

Animal control is holding that pit bull for 10 days while they watch for rabies; if the dog tests positive Mitchell says she may have to get shots. She is pressing charges against the owners.
