Puppies abandoned near San Rafael dumpster up for adoption soon

CALIFORNIA -- A litter of puppies — left next to a dumpster this week — will go up for adoption soon in Marin County, but their abandonment highlights how necessary it is for pet owners to have their animals spayed or neutered, officials said.

A man came into the Marin Humane Society on Tuesday around closing time and told workers there that he had found 9 puppies in a crate in San Rafael that afternoon.

The puppies, which appear to be Rottweiler - Labrador Retriever mixes, were in good health, aside from a few ticks and some roundworm, common maladies for puppies, according to Lisa Bloch, a spokeswoman for the humane society.

The dogs, which appear to be from the same litter, created quite a stir when the humane society posted their pictures to Facebook on Wednesday, Bloch said.

“We were inundated with calls as soon as the post went up,” she said.
