Raleigh pet owners 'covered animal in feces,' charged in cruelty case

NORTH CAROLINA --  Two pet owners in Raleigh are charged with animal cruelty after investigators said they found 15 sick and malnourished cats and dogs inside a North Raleigh townhouse.

Edward Stuart Gordon Jr, 72, and Tammy Thomas Fobes, 54, were arrested and charged with animal cruelty before bonding out of the Wake County Detention Center Thursday.

A search warrant said eight dogs and seven cats were seized from a town house in the 5900 block of Dixon Drive and taken to the Wake County Animal Center.

The dogs and cats were found living in feces.

The owners were also covered in feces, the warrant said.

A person who had visited the home to buy a dog alerted authorities to the conditions.

The person said they could smell feces and urine from outside the front door.

Neighbors were shocked.

"That's a lot of animals to be in one place because these places are not more than 1,600-1,700 square feet at the most," one neighbor said, who wished not to be identified.

The neighbor said he was worried about the unsanitary situation possibly attracting rodents, fleas and ticks.

He was happy to hear the animals had been taken into custody.

"They're probably in a better place because of that I'm sure," he said.

A Wake County spokeswoman would not comment on the condition of the animals because of the pending criminal investigation.

A Raleigh police spokesman said none of the animals had to be euthanized.
