CALIFORNIA -- A California man was cited for animal cruelty Tuesday after police observed he left his dog in his locked vehicle.
Michael Corio of Palo Verde, California, told police he was in a store longer than he expected to be when he was contacted by police.
Police found that his yellow Labrador retriever was panting in the backseat of his white 1997 Toyota 4 Runner with the windows rolled down approximately two inches and no water. Police determined the temperature in the vehicle where the dog was sitting was about 111.5 degrees Fahrenheit using an inferred thermometer.
Police instructed Corio to let his dog out of the vehicle and then provided him with a bowl to give the dog water so the dog could cool down.
Corio was issued a citation of one count of cruelty to animals after he was advised of the temperature in the vehicle.
