Five-year-old boy attacked by family dog

A video I watched said that the dog was a Labrador / Blue Heeler mix that was about 15 years old.

TEXAS -- A five-year-old boy is in the hospital with serious injuries after a vicious dog attack that happened Sunday evening.

The Martinez family told us Ty Alexander Martinez lost his left ear, has several cuts and punctures, and muscle damage due to the depth of the bites.

Less than a week ago, he was outside petting his dog, who Aragon said never had aggressive tendencies.

She said a child who lives in the neighborhood was riding her bike when she saw the attack happening.

"They grew up with him, they were always playing around him and he was never aggressive or anything towards him. He would always take care of them when they were playing outside and just all of a sudden he just turned on them," Aragon said.

Ty lost his left ear, suffered bites on his head and right arm, and even has indentations in the bone due to the  depth of the bite.

Argon said she was in shock on the way to the hospital, holding her son's ear in her hands.

She said Ty was coherent during the ambulance ride from Lamesa to Covenant, "He knew...that his ear was gone and everything that happened with the dog," Aragon said. "He told us everything."

She said after arriving in Lubbock, Ty underwent surgery to reattach his left ear. But Aragon told us the doctors say there is a chance he may still lose it.

Aragon said she's still in shock.

"Pretty scary seeing your child covered in blood. Just the way he was, he was really strong through it all," she said.

Aragon told us that the dog has since been put down.

A go-fund-me account has been created to help with the family's expenses.
