Four-year-old returns home after severe dog attack

WASHINGTON -- A 4-year-old Lacey boy is back home after suffering a vicious attack by a dog his family got from a friend.

Gavin suffered several broken bones earlier this month after his pit bull named Smash mauled him in the backyard.

Gavin’s mother talked to KIRO 7 to set the record straight after what she calls hurtful social media posts.

She was with her son when the dog attacked earlier this month. She said the large pit bull did not have a history of being vicious and has been around children before.

The mother has bite marks from trying to get the dog off Gavin when it attacked.

The child was severely bitten. The dog ripped off the child's nose and broke the eye sockets nearly blinding the boy.

Neighbors helped stop the attack, and poured hot coffee on the dog to make him stop.

Gavin is still afraid of the dog, who was taken by animal services.

He asked his mom to check the house for the dog when he got home from the hospital.

She covered every mirror in the house with towels so he didn't have to see his scars.

Gavin has more surgery in his future, but is healing quicker than expected.
