Humane police rescue 9 sick dogs, investigate animal cruelty

PENNSYLVANIA -- Fifteen animals were left hungry and alone for days, possibly even weeks, in a Mt. Oliver house on Sherman Avenue.

Nine dogs, five cats and one bird were rescued and removed from the home after humane police with Animal Friends were contacted by concerned neighbors.

Police say the dogs are near emaciation and all the animals are in desperate need of a vet's care.

"You could count every bone in their bodies. It's a shame for something like that to happen," said one neighbor who didn't want to give her name.

She said she hasn't seen the people who live here for a couple weeks.

"I could not believe it and I felt so bad because they suffered all this time. It's needless. They shouldn't have. They're beings. They eat, they breathe, they drink, you don't treat beings this way," she said.

A sign on the door shows the renters were evicted four days ago.

Humane officers say it's clear the dogs haven't had fresh food or water since then. Inside, the home was in such bad shape, police had to wear masks.

"The dogs were kept in a place I believe would be considered torture. Very unsanitary. Feces everywhere to the point that there's not a place they could stand where they were not in their own feces," said Rob Fredley, a humane police officer with Animal Friends.

Humane officers say all animals will get medical attention immediately. They will be held as evidence in this animal cruelty case.
