Kitten rescued from brush fire adopted by Miami-Dade police dispatcher

FLORIDA -- A black kitten that was rescued by firefighters during a live Local 10 News report on a massive brush fire in southwest Miami-Dade County has found a new home.

The kitten was found just after Noon Monday hiding in a Modelo beer box a few feet away from a hot spot that crews were working to extinguish.

Annabel Lee, who has been working for 28 years as a Miami-Dade police dispatcher, adopted the kitten and named him Smokey.

Lee said animal abandonment and abuse calls have a special place in her heart.

She said she hopes Smokey's rescue shows people that "everyone deserves a chance to live in a happy home -- even animals."

Meanwhile, the brush fire that sparked Sunday burned about 2,100 acres and is 60 percent contained.
