Mulvane students charged in animal cruelty case

KANSAS -- Three Mulvane High School students have been charged with felony animal cruelty in the connection with the death of baby chicks.

Mulvane Police Chief Dave Williams said as of Friday morning the two juveniles and an 18-year-old had not been arrested. The adult’s name had not been released, pending arrest.

The students were accused of buying several chicks at a local Atwoods. The students allegedly threw one of the chicks up in the air in the Mulvane High School parking lot and let it fall onto the pavement.

Witnesses said when the chick did not immediately die, one of the students allegedly ran over the chick with a vehicle.

Students posted photos of their activity with the chicks to social media.

The students were being investigated for burning chicks alive at a nearby pond.

It was thought at one time this alleged activity might have occurred in Butler County. However, Butler County Attorney Darrin Devinney said he did not believe any of the students’ activity had occurred within the county’s jurisdiction.

There are no charges pending against the students in Butler County at this time, he said.

  1. These "kids" need to have a permanent record and be tracked for the rest of their lives in case they stare doing this sort of thing to people.
