New Britain Woman, Angela Caffrey, Charged With Animal Cruelty

CONNECTICUT -- A city woman faces charges after police say they received an anonymous tip that her pit bull was being abused..

Angela Caffrey was charged with animal cruelty on Tuesday. Police say she failed to provide the dog with proper care.

Police received a call in late February that said a small pit bull in an apartment on 380 South Main St. was being abused. The person, who remained anonymous, said that a man was hitting the dog and that the dog was constantly crying.

The person also said that the dog was seen limping and appeared to have a broken leg, and that the dog may have been slammed against a wall.

Caffrey told police that the dog was in the care of her boyfriend and that she believed the dog's injuries resulted from falling off the bed, according to police. She told police she didn't have the dog treated because of financial hardship.

An animal control officer took the dog to a veterinarian, who found that it had injuries to the right leg and face. Police said the veterinarian said the injuries were consistent with abuse.

Police said they also have an arrest warrant charging Caffrey's boyfriend, Quamane Cherry, with cruelty to animals in connection with this case.

The dog is being treated and is expected to undergo surgery on Thursday.
