Nine animal cruelty charges filed against Julie Bernet; neighbors say she claims to be a dog breeder

KANSAS -- A metro woman is expected in court on Thursday to answer to nine counts of cruelty to animals. The Johnson County district attorney handed down those charges on Wednesday against Julie Bernet. Neighbors tell FOX 4 the woman claims to be a dog breeder

Records show Bernet bonded out of jail on Wednesday evening, and as a condition of her bond she cannot care for animals.

There was as a gate keeping FOX 4 from knocking on her door to ask her about the charges, but there appeared to be several dog kennels on the front of her property that could be seen from the road.

Court documents claim that she didn’t provide the proper food, water and shelter for several animals.
Some neighbors tell FOX 4 she had several dogs get loose and roam the neighborhood, and that the number she cared for continued to grow.

“It used to be six, but then there got to be, I’m going to say 15-to-20 in the kennel,” said one neighbor who didn’t want his identity revealed.

Neighbors say she also has two horses on the property, which FOX 4’s cameras spotted.
