Owner of pit bull involved in Winlock dog attack challenges fines

WASHINGTON -- The owner of a pit bull that attacked a smaller dog in late March is contesting her citations in court, Winlock police said Tuesday.

Neighborhood eyewitnesses on March 22 said the pit bull mix bit a leashed Jack Russell terrier on the neck and was shaking it near the corner of Northwest Benton and West Walnut streets.

The terrier laid motionless in a pool of blood, witnesses said.

Though the terrier survived, it was later euthanized due to the extent of its injuries, Winlock Police Chief Terry Williams said.

The pit bull owner, whose identity was not available Tuesday, was cited for having a dog at large, owning a dog without a pet license and owning a vicious dog.

The dog, which does not have a history of attacking other dogs, is in quarantine, Williams said.

Williams said the owner is fighting her citations. The owner’s court date has not yet been scheduled.

“(The owner) can pay a fine, but I don’t think she wants to do that,” he said. “(The owners) said they’ll relocate or get rid of the dog to someone who knows how to deal with it. If she says she no longer has the animal, they may reduce the court cost.”

The only place this dog needs to go is to the county dump after they've euthanized it.
