Accused Animal Abuser, Joseph Gann, Appears In Court, Surviving Animals Thrive

TENNESSEE -- In an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, an alleged animal abuser made his first appearance in a Hamilton County courtroom Thursday morning.

"Who does this? Who would want to do this? You have no regard for life," says the Executive Director of the Humane Educational Society, Bob Citrullo.

That's where seven dogs rescued from Gann's home are rehabilitating.

This, while their former owner is facing shocking allegations.

Neighbors say Gann threw one of his small dogs into the teeth of a starving pit bull, who mauled and killed it.

That's when they called police, who arrested him and charged him with cruelty to animals.

"If that, in fact, turns out to be true, I'm sure there's going to be a lot of human outcry that justice be served," says Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Hammond.

But it gets worse.

While investigating, officers found a larger dog whose skull had been smashed with a hammer. The same neighbors say Gann did it nearly a week earlier.

The dog laid there, barely alive and suffering, until officers got there and put it of its misery.

"There's a proven cycle. It's well-documented with people that abuse animals. As time goes on, they end up going down the road where they're committing harder crimes to people," states Citrullo.

Gann faces a laundry list of charges, and together, his bond is nearly $100,000.

The shelter and Hamilton County Sheriff's Office are working together to seek justice on the two dead animals found on the property.

But the shelter's other job is giving the surviving animals a second chance.

"Rehabilitate them, make them healthy, make sure they are okay, get their medical care and cleaned, eating properly, then get them a chance at a real home. You know? A REAL home. Not a home where you're chained and live in fear all the time," says Citrullo.

In a strange twist, the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department is also looking into a fire that happened at Gann's home. Shortly after his arrest, Gann's rental home caught fire. The home is a total loss.

The fire remains under investigation.
