Animal control officers seize 50 cats, dogs, arrest N. Knoxville resident

TENNESSEE -- Knoxville animal control officers on Thursday confiscated 47 cats and three dogs from a North Knoxville home and charged the resident with felony aggravated cruelty to animals, police said.

Officers entered a second home owned by the same woman and found the remains of a dozen deceased cats, according to Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk.

The search-and-seizure operation by Police Department animal control officers began at 8:15 a.m. when they entered 3416 Fountain Park Blvd. Officers found the 50 cats and dogs inside the house that was described as being in disarray, DeBusk said.

“The animals were suffering from various health issues and overall poor health,” DeBusk said. The animals had little food and poor living conditions, he said.

Officers seized the animals and took them to Young-Williams Animal Shelter to be examined by veterinarians.

Officers charged Nanette Michelle Tallent, 54, who owns the Fountain Park Boulevard home, with one count of aggravated cruelty to animals and one misdemeanor charge of cruelty to animals, DeBusk said. Officers also cited Tallent with having too many animals and not having proof of rabies shots.

DeBusk said additional charges are pending after veterinarians assess the health of the confiscated cats and dogs.

Tallent was at the Fountain Park Boulevard home when officers arrived. She did not resist officers’ efforts to seize the cats and dogs.

Tallent has owned the two-bedroom, ranch-style home since July 2012, records show. The 1,749-square-foot home was appraised in 2013 at $130,200.

DeBusk said the animal control unit “had some complaints, specifically concerning a foul odor” at the home that prompted the investigation.

Officers on Thursday also entered Tallent’s home at 1232 Armstrong Ave. No one was in the house, but officers found the remains of 12 long-dead cats, DeBusk said.

Tallent bought that two-bedroom, 1,043-square-foot home in 1999.
