Cops: Man threw girlfriend's dog from house during dispute

CONNECTICUT -- A Sycamore Drive man was arrested Wednesday night after police said he tossed his girlfriend's dog out of the house during an altercation.

Martin Smiley, 67, was charged with cruelty to animals, disorderly conduct and criminal violation of a protective order.

Officers were dispatched at 8:43 p.m. Wednesday to investigate the report of a domestic disturbance between two people living together, according to a police report.

Police said the dispute between Smiley and the woman became physical, and that he then struck her dog and threw the animal from the house.

A protective order had been imposed against Smiley as a result of a prior domestic incident, police said.

Bond was set at $2,500 and he was scheduled to appear the next day at state Superior Court in Norwalk.
