PENNSYLVANIA -- A Homewood woman who police say abused her two pit bulls so badly that one had to be euthanized last month was arrested Thursday, city public safety spokeswoman Sonya Toler said.
Desiree Moore, 24, with addresses listed at 7225 Bennett St. and 701 N. Dallas Ave. faces two counts of animal cruelty, according to court records. She was arraigned Thursday night and released on a $10,000 unsecured bond.
On April 2, police and animal care officers went to the second-floor Bennett Street apartment after they received an anonymous tip that there were two dogs inside, one possibly dead, according to a criminal complaint.
When police found the dogs, a male and a female, the male, who weighed 28 lbs., was so emaciated that he could not walk or stand. The apartment was also in deplorable condition with dog feces covering the floors.
Both dogs were taken to the Animal Rescue League and on April 3, the male was euthanized. The female, who witnesses said is named "China," was placed in the custody of Animal Friends, the complaint said.
The first floor tenant told police that Ms. Moore would ask her to feed the dogs when the tenant would call Ms. Moore to complain about the dogs barking or crying. Ms. Moore would disappear for days, even weeks at a time, and would come home to feed the dogs normally once a week, the tenant told police.
Another neighbor, who lives adjacent to Ms. Moore's building, told police that a young woman lives on the second-floor of 7225 Bennett and that there is sometimes a young man there. The neighbor told police the two abused the dogs and the neighbor would often hear the dogs "barking like crazy."
When asked to elaborate, the neighbor told police that the female was always yelling at the dogs and one time the male "hauled off and punched the dog in the face," the complaint said.
Ms. Moore has a court date set for May 28.
