NEBRASKA -- The last day of school is usually a happy time, but things changed quickly for a 12-year-old Omaha boy who was bitten by a dog that needs to be located.
The Corcoran family prepares to celerbate the end of school for two brothers. Liam is graduating from high school. The excitement has been curbed a bit after his brother Aiden had a rough last day of school.
"I know a lot of people in that neighborhood and so he just told me to ask them to see if they knew who it was," said Liam. "We still don't know."
It was Aiden's last day of school Thursday at Holy Cross Elementary where he had safety patrol duties at South 49th and Pine streets. That's where he saw the German shepherd and the owner. He said the dog came up and sniffed him.
"When she got up to the corner the dog just sniffed me for like two seconds and then bit me, then she said, 'Are you okay?' I said yeah and then she just crossed the street."
But it was serious, a quarter-sized chunk of skin had been ripped off Aiden's backside. "So we took him to the hospital," said his father Frank. "The doctor said they need to take a look at it to determine if the Humane Society needed to be involved. They looked at it and said yes."
Now the family is looking for the German, needing to know if the dog has rabies. The Nebraska Humane Society tells WOWT 6 News the dog was on a leash with a blond woman who was jogging. Emails have been sent throughout the neighborhood to help in the search.
"You don't think much about it, but when it happens to your own child it takes on a life of its own and the worry is there," said Frank.
Meanwhile, Aiden's adjusting to the pain of the bite. "Sit like this, at the edge of the chair." The family has about seven days (including Saturday) to locate the dog before Aiden is forced to undergo rabies shots.
If you know the woman or have seen the dog, please call the Humane Society at 402-444-7800.
