FLORIDA -- A deputy shot a pit bull mix in self-defense Friday afternoon after the animal attacked him twice, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. The animal was later euthanized.
According to the Sheriff's Office, the deputy encountered an unleashed pit bull that started biting at his legs when the officer arrived around 2:30 p.m. at 609 S 70th St. in the Palm River area to speak to the homeowner.
To avoid shooting the dog, the deputy rushed to his patrol car, where he called the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center, said Sheriff's Office spokesman Larry McKinnon.
While waiting, the deputy saw the dog charge after a young boy biking down the street, McKinnon said.
The deputy leaped from the car and screamed at the dog to divert its attention. The dog disappeared between houses, and the boy rode away safely.
Minutes later, a woman came to the house, McKinnon said. The pit bull re-emerged and charged the deputy. To defend himself, the deputy fired at least one round into the animal's hide, McKinnon said.
The animal safety officer arrived and the pit bull was transported to a veterinarian and later euthanized.
