Judge Daphne Means Curtis awarded the huge settlement to Steven Constantine, who was injured in early October in Detroit. His family filed a lawsuit against the owner, 61-year-old Derrick Felton (aka Derick Felton, Butch Felton).
Curtis called the cased "one of the worst injury cases ever seen where the victim is still alive" when she announced the settlement on Tuesday.
Attorney Mark Bernstein told the Associated Press the amount awarded Tuesday to Constantine was an "enormously symbolic statement" against irresponsible dog owners.
It all unfolded on October 2, 2014. Constantine was attacked by the pack of dogs around 10:00 that night. Neighbors called police to report the attack and said the man was laying on the ground and surrounded by the pack of dogs.
The victim who could barely speak when officer arrived had his hands and feet nearly chewed off by at least 7 dogs. When medics arrived, the attack was still happening but they were powerless to stop it until police arrived.
Police shot some of the dogs and killed two at the scene. The others scattered and took shelter in a nearby home, owned by Felton. He returned home at the time of the attack and he was arrested.

Constantine lost an arm and a foot and his injuries will require roughly 35 surgeries before he can recover.
