ARKANSAS -- A man is in the Washington County jail after police say he killed a 6-week-old puppy.
Fayetteville police arrested 20-year-old Joshua Woodruff on Friday afternoon after receiving an animal cruelty complaint at his apartment on Mount Comfort Road.
According to a police report, Woodruff confirmed to the officers that a puppy had died at his residence the previous day. Woodruff told officers it fell off a third-story ledge.
The report indicated that when police asked him to be honest, Woodruff told them he had been upset that the puppy relieved itself in his apartment and that he had kicked it off the ledge after letting it outside.
Woodruff told police the puppy died immediately after hitting the pavement.
The report indicated Woodruff admitted to throwing the puppy's body into the woods behind the apartment complex before later going back and trying to bury it.
Animal control found the puppy's remains in the woods. They advised police that the puppy had been decapitated. The body was taken for evidence.
Woodruff was arrested on charges of aggravated animal cruelty. He was interviewed at the Washington County Sheriff's Office, where he told officers he had actually picked the puppy up and threw it over the guard rail.
Rebecca Chatman, who lives near Woodruff, said she is shocked.
"It's really unfortunate that people have so much, like, anger, that they would go to those extreme measures," she said.
Woodruff's roommates said they were keeping a dog they said belongs to Woodruff.
His roommates said they were in shock and don't want Woodruff back at the apartment anytime soon.
He is being held on a $3,500 bond. His next court date is Wednesday.
