Man says pit bull killed his Yorkshire terrier

CALIFORNIA -- Michael Duffy is searching his neighborhood for a gray and white pit bull that attacked and killed his 8-year-old Yorkshire Terrier named Teddy.

Duffy, 61, said that on May 22 he let his two Yorkies out in his front yard, located in Las Amigas Drive, as he usually does. He heard his 3-year-old Yorkie, Buttons, barking and went outside to see what the commotion was about.

Once he went outside he found the pit bull standing over Teddy, who was on his side and barely breathing, he said.

The pit bull took off and Duffy said Teddy later passed away. Duffy said he grabbed his machete and tried to find the pit bull after the attack.

"Come to find out this dog has been wandering the streets for months and no one knows where it lives," Duffy said. "I believe that's the same dog that bit a kid by Lillian Park. If that's the case this dog should have been put down a long time ago."

Duffy said he called Barstow Police after the incident. On Wednesday, Lt. Mike Hunter said a police officer responded but the dog was not found. Hunter said police notified the Humane Society to handle the incident.

Humane Society officials declined comment, citing confidentiality.

RIP sweet Teddy

"I hope they find that dog before I do," Duffy said. "My wife isn't doing too good right now. Our dogs mean the world to us. This is just like one of her own kids died."

Duffy said he wants the dog off the streets and is taking matters into his own hands. Duffy said he still lets Buttons outside his home but he now stands out there with his machete.

"All this tells me is other dog owners simply need to stand outside with their dogs at all times with a shotgun," Duffy said. "If my own dogs can't go into my front yard without a vicious pit bull ripping is throat out, then what else are we to do? What about a kid playing in his yard? Then what happens?"
