More dogs seized from Lititz woman, Barbara Dienner, who pleaded guilty to animal cruelty

PENNSYLVANIA -- A Lititz woman cited twice for having too many dogs at her home is facing charges for the third time in the past six months.

Barbara Dienner, 52, was allowed by a court order to have only one dog, but eight were removed from her farm Thursday, Lancaster County SPCA director Susan Martin said.

“Now that she’s disobeyed the court order, we asked her to surrender all dogs to us,” Martin said.

Dienner pleaded guilty Feb. 13 to 62 summary counts of animal cruelty, one for each cocker spaniel-mix that was removed from her farm Dec. 16. She was ordered to pay a $50 fine for each count, a total of $3,100, and for each count she was prohibited from owning more than one dog for 90 days, a total of more than 15 years.

In March, humane law enforcement officers said they found 14 dogs and five puppies at the farm, including eight adult dogs living in a barn in unsanitary conditions and lacking access to water. Six more adult dogs and the puppies were living in the house.

“She was ordered to get a psych evaluation,” Martin said. “She was court ordered and that is due by August, so we’re hopeful that she’ll get that done and get the help she needs.”

She is listed in the Lancaster County Amish Church Directory. Also, a newspaper
account covering Barbara Dienner's 2012 hearing said "Members of Dienner's church
congregation attended the hearing in support."

Dienner’s cousin, John Dienner, said she’s always had a soft spot for animals.

“They always seemed to be cared for. She does good. She always had one in the house with her, some that sleep with her,” John Dienner said. “The area they were living in was not the best, but healthwise they looked OK.”

Her family is hopeful Dienner will obey the law and avoid trouble in the future.

“I hope she learns her lesson this time and not get so many,” John Dienner said. “They said she’s not allowed to have none for a while, so maybe she’ll listen.”
