ILLINOIS -- Rescuing a cat from a tree is one thing, but saving a stray puppy from a septic tank? That actually happened for the Pembroke Fire Protection District on Monday morning.
William Johnson, who rents a home at 4371 S. Walnut St., heard a whimper when he fed his own dog, Spencer. After looking around, he found a puppy inside an open septic tank.
After Johnson called for help, Pembroke firefighter Jonathan Baines dug deep and pulled the puppy out.
"Being a dog lover, I am happy to save a puppy's life," Baines said. "That's part of our job."
Johnson's fiancee, Dorothy Williams, named the rescued puppy, Tiger. The couple cannot have another dog, but Williams was attached.
"He's kinda cute," she said. "I want him for myself, but it's better for animal control to take him and find him a new home."
Kankakee County Animal Control took Tiger for further medical examination. Once the exams are complete, animal control officer Brian Taylor said the agency will determine whether to put Tiger up for adoption or send him to a rescue.
Johnson praised Pembroke firefighters for the rescue.
"These guys are the big heroes. They got him out and put us at ease," he said. "Maybe they can make Tiger their mascot."
