INDIANA -- The brown wirehaired dachshund, Bosco, had gotten into the cat’s litter box again and was punished.
Severely enough that the small dog had blood coming from a nostril, bruises to his head and trauma to his left eye.
He would go blind in that eye from the damage.
The person believed to be responsible, Shayne J. Kolbasky, 31, was charged Wednesday with one felony count of animal cruelty.
Kolbasky, of the 2100 block of Juliette Avenue, was left alone with the dog Sept. 28, 2014, when it suffered the injuries, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in the case, which detailed the dog’s injuries.
Kolbasky’s girlfriend, Ashley Smith, told investigators that Bosco was whining and had something wrong with his eye when she got home, so she took him to an emergency veterinarian, according to the report.
Investigators with Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control found a broken and dented broomstick, with the broom head broken off, in a trash can at the home. It had not been that way when Smith left for work, she told police, according to the affidavit. The report did not say whether investigators believed Kolbasky had hit the dog with the broom.
Animal Control tried several times to interview Kolbasky about the dog’s injuries but was not able to reach him, the report said.
