Sheltie abandoned in a dumpster has a new home

INDIANA -- A dog found in a dumpster last week has a new family Friday night.

Abbie, a 3-year-old sheltie, was found in a trash pile near Chippewa and Main Street in South Bend.

South Bend Animal Control said Michiana has rallied around the dog over the past week after hearing her heartbreaking story.

Scott Holmlund, who adopted the Sheltie, said, “She's a little timid and frightened but she wants to go out the door real fast so we're going to take her home.”

Matt Harmon, the manager at the South Bend Animal Care and Control, added, “There was a huge outcry after we were able to put her into the adoption center after the legal holding period. People were super excited to meet her and be able to interact with her a little bit.”

Abbie is currently only 15 pounds, but she's expected to gain ten more pounds at home.

Abbie will have a couple of playmates, two more Shelties, in her new family.
