ALABAMA -- A 53-year-old Bibb County woman is facing animal cruelty charges and more than a dozen of her animals had to be euthanized.
The investigation began Friday, May 15 in West Blocton. A compliance Officer had received several complaints of several animals not being taken care of.
The owner of the property, Tammie Kornegay of West Blocton, was being held in Bibb County Jail on a DUI charge she had received the weekend before.
The compliance officer and a deputy asked Kornegay about her animals and they say she told them the animals were fine and had plenty of food and water. The compliance officer asked Ms. Kornegay to sign the animals over so they could be taken care of and she refused.
The deputy and compliance officer then traveled to 13 Robin Drive and found several dogs in pens around the house with no food or water. They could see several animals looking out windows of the mobile home, which was shut up with no air conditioning on. When they went inside the mobile home, they found a cat was discovered dead inside a closet inside the master bedroom and one dog was found dead under the mobile home.
The deputy obtained two felony cruelty to animals by torture warrants for Ms. Kornegay. There were nine cats found on the property alive, all deprived of food and water. There were seven dogs found on the property alive, all deprived of food and water.
There were 18 animals seized from the property, 16 alive and 2 dead. Of the 16 taken, 15 had to be euthanized because of the poor conditions they were in.
Deputy Kevin Lawrence stated, " This is by far the worst case of animal cruelty I have ever seen.
"These poor animals were nothing but skin and bones, and all trapped inside filthy pens and inside an absolutely filthy mobile home were they had not been taken care of for months. These animals didn't deserve to be treated this way and I wish we could have saved more but at least we saved one."
Sheriff Hannah stated, " Animal cruelty in Bibb County will not be tolerated. We take these laws just as serious as any other laws we enforce. If you have animals that you can't care for any longer please bring them to our animal facility so we can hopefully get them adopted and to a home that can care for them."
Ms. Kornegay is currently being held in the Bibb County Jail under a $126,000.00 bond.

I am thinking how one can live with so many pets and didn’t cared for even one and then gets charged for DUI. What kind of life she would be living? I asked my friend who has just joined a Los Angeles DUI lawyer and he thinks she would have to spend some good time behind bars.
