Three horses found abandoned near Pearl River; one euthanized due to condition

LOUISIANA -- A veterinarian was forced to euthanize one of three horses found abandoned earlier this week just outside Pearl River.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating the possible case of animal cruelty after being notified of the abandoned horses early Tuesday morning.

According to the STPSO, deputies arrived at the secluded area near Pearl River and found three horses. Each appeared malnourished, neglected and showed possible signs of abuse.

"One of the horses appeared to have a broken or badly injured leg in addition to being extremely malnourished," the STPSO said.

Witnesses told the STPSO that a white Chevrolet pickup truck was seen in the area Monday evening.

It was reportedly pulling a newer-model silver horse trailer, but no description of the driver was available.

The STPSO said deputies stayed with the horses overnight until the St. Tammany Animal Services Department and a veterinarian arrived to evaluate the horses.

Animal services was able to load two of the horses into the STPSO's horse trailer, but the third horse was in too bad of shape and had to be euthanized.

STPSO detectives are working with animal services in the investigation. No further updates about the two surviving horses have been released.

Anyone with information is asked to call the STPSO at 985-898-2338.
