Driver Ed Kline said he was delivering a letter to an apartment in the 9700 block of East Iliff Avenue last week when a little girl answered the door.
Kline remembers backing up, but after about two steps the dogs started lunging at him. He said the dogs clamped down, one on each arm, both refusing to let go.
A couple in the apartment next door heard his cries for help and called 911.
“We came out to the porch to see what was happening,” said Steve, who doesn’t want his last name used. “The dogs were coming after him and I got him into my back patio and slammed the gate shut.”
He showed pictures after the attack, including a pool of blood that covered the entryway of the narrow walkway to the apartments.
“I am just glad we were here,” Steve said.
Kline needed nearly 90 stitches in his arms and has a hard time lifting his hands above his head. He also suffered a broken foot from the attack.
“I still wake up two to three times a night and all I see is those eyes coming at me,” Kline said.
He considers the couple heroes for coming to his rescue.
“I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you,” Kline said.
Steve doesn’t consider himself a hero, just someone who was at the right place at the right time.
“If I was in the same situation I hope someone would help me out,” Steve said.
The owner of the dogs said Wednesday night she said she is extremely sorry for what happened to the delivery man and said the animals have been put down so they don’t attack again.
