North Carolina: Malnourished, injured dog found near Charlotte

NORTH CAROLINA -- Police say they are looking for the person responsible for the inhumane treatment of a dog that was found in the middle of a Matthews road.

The dog, which officials have named Echo, was found lying in the road on Lakeview Circle on Wednesday, according to reports.

Tim Aycock, Public Information Officer for the Matthews Police Department says the dog’s condition was heartbreaking.

“He had several injuries that had healed and he had fresh injuries as well. His teeth had been shaved down,” Aycock said.

Aycock told WBTV they believe Echo had been used for dog fighting for quite some time.

“He had consistent injuries with dog fighting. And what that means is it’s almost like a boxer would have a sparring partner that’s what this type of dog was probably used for,” Aycock said.

Police believe Echo was dropped in the area from a vehicle on June 10 between 11:30 a.m. and 12:40 p.m.

Neighbors were shocked to hear about the abused animal showing up on their street.

“Anyone that would treat an animal like that should be treated like that themselves. If they’re that nasty of a person to do to an animal, what would they do to a human?” one resident asked.

Echo is recovering at Animal Care and Control in Charlotte where they say the animal has gained eight pounds.

If you have any information about the dog or the people responsible you are asked to call the Matthews Police Department at 704-847-5555.

A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information leading to a conviction.

No word on if and when the dog will be available for adoption.
